Communication, assertiveness and time management.

I could use these techniques to help others with their problems. for example, communication wise I would help anyone with the problems. Assertivewise wise, I do not know what to do in this situation as I am not an assertive person myself. However, if I was assertive, I would be firm but fair and i will ask appropriate questions. Time management wise, I am an artist experimenting with Photoshop and I use most of my workdays looking for templates to use as well as listening to some music to fit the mood of the template that I am trying to edit.

My learning style and quick description.

I did a survay and I got visual learn which means someone with a visual learning style has a preference for seen or observed things, including pictures, diagrams, demonstrations, displays, handouts, films, flip-chart, etc.

I am very good at photoshop. I am still experimenting with different ideas and tools to make some great images and it is coming along nicely. I use music as my inspiration to make the pictures and really just let the music visualise in my mind of how i want to picture to look like and try to recreate it in Photoshop as best as I can. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t and have to try a different approach. Sometimes when I put the finished image onto my Google Drive, I will delete some of them to remake in the future when my photoshop skills are improved. The only thing that I need to improve on is being less of a idealist and be a realist with my work so I dont dissapoint myself. Other than that, I am great at what I do (for the most part).

I am also pretty decent at video editing. I have made various video and posted them on Youtube but I have made them unlisted because I have lost passion for video making thanks to Photoshop and music being my new passions that I go with. I mainly use Sony Vegas to make videos but now if I am needed to make a video for a project I now mainly use Premiere Pro. I am pretty much by myself when I work on the projects. I perfer it this way because I can get the shots that I want and edit them as I please. I need more experience with Premiere Pro as it is not the same as Sony Vegas in terms of controls and interface. I have done various videos in Premiere Pro that have garnered postive acclaim and so did my Photoshops aswell.

Digital Media Learning Outcome 3 – Video

I have learned about video making.

  • It is the recording of moving visual images.
  • The number of images depend on the frame rate a.k.a fps.
  • The advantages of using a tripod is to make the footage look steady.
  • There are three main types of shots. Those are:
  • Full – which is a full body shot.
  • Medium – which is shot from the waste up.
  • Close – a close up shot of something, whether it be someones face or a object important to the plot.
  • The rule of thirds is important because it gives the photo a much nicer edge.
  • You must always use a strap just in case you dont drop it by accident.
  • Use white balance to work in different light circumstances.

Digital Media Learning Outcome 4 – Audio

This is what we learned:

  • Learned different types of audio usage like speeches, music (either live or recorded), talking, film (the soundtrack, sfx and dialogue), podcast, etc.
  • Learned about pitch and frequency, ultrasound and infrasound.

Hertz (Hz) is a unit that measures frequency. The human range of hearing is from 20hz to 22khz. Ultrasound is used in a pregnancy scan and infrasound is what whales and elephants use to communicate with each other.

  • Learned about the doppler effect.

The Doppler Effect is a sound that travels past you. Imagine a car with a droney like sound, the sound changes from right to left.

  • Learned about Foley Sound, Location Sound, Wild track, Voiceover and special effects.

Foley sound – the reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added to visual media.

Location sound – recording all sound on set.

Wild Track – an audio recording intended to be synctonized with film or video but recorded seperatly.

Voiceover – a piece of narration in a film or broadcast.

Special FX (SFX) – are visuals illustrations in a film or images.

  • Learned about audio at home, mono, stereo and surround sound.

Mono means sound from only one direction.

Stereo means sound from left or right of where you are standing.

Surround sound means sound coming from all directions.

  • Finally, learned about what the following equipment are:

Dead Cat – Designed to minimise wind sound.

Broadcast Headset – To communnicate with other crew members on the set.

Shotgun Microphone – a mic that records a more narrow range.

Boom Pole – To record a person strictly without having the mic in the shot.

Lapel Mic – To be attatched to a person for better audio of the person that is being recorded + it is mobile and wireless.

Graphic Design Learning Outcome 11


We learned about the career oppertunities of graphic design, both locally and nationally. There are many places for a graphic designer to take. Such as: creative director, art director, illustrator and a brand identity developer. I have also learned that there is a growing number of jobs within the graphic design industry in Ireland. You need to have a couple years of experience to apply for these jobs. As I finished this module, it will lead me to a QQI Level 4 Minor Award in Graphic Design. I need more experience with Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, etc. in order to be job ready.

Coolmine Industrial Go Karting

The centre is thinking about doing go karting beside the Dublin Airport but the date has not been announced just yet.


Kart City Raceway Track

Go Karting is racing in miniature karts usually around a track that is not complex and easy to understand. The karts are at a similar speed to each other and you have to try your best to race to the finish in first place. This isn’t like Mario Kart. There are no items like the mushroom and the banana to help you out. This is all real life stuff with no items involved whatsoever. We don’t know what the winner receives as a prize in the event but we are hoping it would be a special prize. I mean why wouldn’t it be, it only makes winning this race more valuable. The prize will most likely be a video game console or something else that is just as valuable.

Today, I have learned about copyright and how it effects the media in a positive and negative way.

There are 4 main acts of copyright in place in Ireland. Those are:

  • Copyright and Related Rights Act (2000, 2004)
  • Data Protection Act (1988, 2003)
  • Defamation Act (2009)
  • Consumer Protection Act (2007)

It also applies to:

  • Finance Acts
  • Employment Legislation
  • Privacy Bill

There are certain difficulties with enforcing copyright. There are file sharing sites shutting down and coming back, anonymity and among other things. The current copyright issues is lacking fair use, file sharing and infringment. Copyright originally applied to books but is now also applied to movies, music, etc.

There are some advantages and disadvantages of copyright in relation to digital media. It protects the artist work and keeps it from others from stealing it. However, it can be frustrating for people who want to remix it for non profitable purposes.

When you give your personal details to an organization or to an individual, they have the duty to keep the information safe and sound. This is know as data protection.

A data controller is a person who (either alone or jointly or in common with other persons) determines the purposes for which and the manner in which any personaldata are, or are to be, processed.

A data processor is a subsidiary company owned by a data controller to process personal data on its behalf (for example to manage the payroll) is a distinct legal person and is a data processor.

The Defamation Act of 2009 allows you the right to bring someone to court for publishing false information online and sue the for an undisclosed amount.

The Consumer Protection Act of 2007 allows the individual to ask for a refund if the product they purchased has been false advertised or broken upon arrival.

Many business have something called an IAUP which blocks business computers from visiting sites like Facebook and NSFW sites.

Digital Media Learning Outcome 2 – Using a Digital Camera

I have learned how a camera works. The way a camera works is that you click a button, the apeture opens up and lets light in. The amount of light creates an image through the sensor on the camera.

We also learned about the advantages of digital cameras over film cameras.

  • You can fit 1000s of pictures onto a memory card
  • Preview your photo instantly.
  • No waiting time.
  • Editable in Photoshop.

We learned about camera maintenence. We did things like taking the battery, lens cap and SD card out and put it back in. With the battery, we learned how to plug the battery in the charger.

I have learned about the different types of lenses in a camera. These are Telephoto lens (which takes pictures from a distance), Fisheye lens (which makes the world tiny) and wide angle lens (which widens the sides). We also learned about different types of photography. These are light streaking (trails of light in a picture), drone photography (aerial photography), long exposure (taking a photo that adds additional seconds of timelapse footage) and macro photography (taking detailed photos of tiny things). We also learned about the difference between timelapse and stop motion. We also given some tips on photo taking. We were told to use our legs, taking a picture at a low or high angle, placing the subject off-centre, the rule of thirds and asking for permission.
